Experimenting lags when using custom portraits

I am playing on Android, a Galaxy S4 mini to be accurate. It's apparently powerful enough for the game, though I do have lags when heavy animations are on screen (incendiary cloud and such, or ADHW).
However, when I use custom portraits, the game slows down a lot.
If I use only one custom portrait, it's hardly noticeable.
However when running a party full of such portraits, the game is at least three times slower than it normally is.
It also appears that this is particularly true for large portrait that were automatically shrinked to fit the appropriate size.
Is there any way to get rid of these lags (besides not using too many of them at once)? I could edit them to fit the appropriate size and create but that's quite a long thing to do, especially on a mobile phone and i m not even sure it would solve it totally
