Doesn't Vanilla Paladin feel lackluster in comparison to it's Archetypes?

I have been looking at them for a while now and despite the negatives of choosing a Paladin Archetype in Baldur's Gate, you are always better off picking an Archetype over the Default Paladin.

I kinda wish the Default Paladin would be granted an extra use of lay on hands on a certain level to offset this, so the Paladin could be more desirable in certain cases, like the Archetypes are meant to be.

It's the same for the cleric kits. So I agree, but I don't want to see this changed outside of mods.

Not really, Bioware made a lot of the kits stronger than they were supposed to be. For example, the Inquisitor does not 2x level dispell in PnP.

What is the PnP version of the Inquisitor?

It's in the Complete Paladin's Handbook. The PnP Inquisitor gets Dispel (Evil) Magic at level 3, gains another casting every three levels up to 6/day at level 18, but only casts it at their own level. So a level 18 PnP Inquisitor can cast Dispel six times per day at level 18 ability. A level 18 BG Inquisitor can cast it only four times per day but at level 36 ability. At level 26, a BG Inquisitor would have the same 6/day as PnP, but would now also be casting it at level 52 compared to the PnP's 26.

The Cleric kits are the worst offenders, since the only "restriction" is alignment.

In many cases it's just Bioware/Black isle doing strange and often completely unbalanced changes to the PnP kits.

I think they made the cleric kits so appealing because in the Forgotten Realms you technically CAN'T be a cleric without worshiping a god of some sort. And if the cleric kits weren't so amazing compared to the default, why on earth would you ever not take the default?

Indeed: What on earth is a default cleric anyway? Isn't the cleric always kit since he is worshipping a deity of somekind. How can you be just a cleric?

As for giving the a default paladin a bit of edge, how about letting him gain a mastery in weapon types? Then kit paladins would trade off the weapon mastery to all kinds of bonuses and abilities. :)
