Why did BD decide to use the TOB engine instead of the IWD2 engine?

IWD2 seems a lot more refined compared to any of the other IE games. The spell animations are cool, the way the spellbook works. Your avatar changes to reflect the class you have the highest level in (i.e. start as rogue and then choose wizard, as soon as you have more levels in wizard your paper doll and character uses wizard model.

Why didn't they use this engine instead of the TOB one?

Well, their contract only includes the BG games, so the IWD2 assets are most likely off-limits for their use.

And IWD2 uses 3rd edition rules, which would make gameplay totally different (for worse i reckon).

I hate 3rd ed rules - the main reason I never got into IWD2 or NWNs.
  • Haters gonna hate? (I love 3rd ed rules)

But I think 2e fits far better for the time-frame the game is set in, and its hard to imagine BG in any other way.

I actually liked the 3E system used in IWD2.

There's actually a mod under development to apply the IWD2 system to BG2.

I too am a fan of 3.x. Was never really a big fan of Thac0.

I don't really think that 3E can't work in this timeline. IWD2 took place before the Time of Troubles.
