Confused about downloading SoD

When I purchased BG1 and BG2 form Beamdog, there was a launcher that installed the game onto my computer and I have shortcuts on my desktop to access both games. It seems that when I downloaded SoD that it is more like a Steam game, in that I must use the Beamdog launcher to play from a list of games (BG1 and BG2 show up as being not downloaded, since I didn't use this launcher to download them). Does this mean that if I don't happen to have Internet access, I can't play the game?
Also, when I accessed SoD, I am able to play BG1 or SoD, and I apparently still have my BG1 save filed. However, when I accessed my pre-existing BG1 shortcut, it was the normal version without SoD, so it seems that I have two BG1s to choose from.
Is there a way to download SoD like I did with the others?
Edit: Okay, it seems I found the launcher that downloads SoD directly to my PC. So what if I download the game that way and through the "Steam-like" version?

1. "Normal" download. An .exe file comes up and you can install the game to your PC as normal. This is how I installed BG1 and BG2.
2. "Steam-style" download. This launcher requires a Beamdog login in order to download the game. To access the game, it seems that I must login and choose from my list of Beamdog games. According to the launcher, BG1 and BG2 are not installed (since I installed them through method 1). I can also start SoD through this launcher. Does this method always require a login to play the game? I seem to recall some Steam games that would require a login to play, if I'm not mistaken. This would be undesirable if true.
What if I download the game through both methods...?
The setup.exe client install should send it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Baldur's Gate Siege of Dragonspear by default.
The BeamDog client will put it under these folders by default for Windows 7.
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\BeamDog\Player\Games
