Buckling up with bucklers

I was trying to decide if my shaman should be using bucklers or single weapon style, and I realised that even after all this time, I'm unsure of exactly how buckler restrictions work. So I had a couple of questions:

When they say they don't protect against piercing or missile, does that affect the enchantment as well? A buckler +1 would give +2AC vs bludgeoning and slashing, but would it get the +1 bonus vs piercing and missile?

Does the shield proficiency work with bucklers? Allowing them to give a bonus against missiles?

Also, wouldn't it be cool if Shaman could use small shields? While there's next to no enchanted bucklers, there are at least some decent small shields, but they don't get used since everyone that can use smalls can also use medium and large with no penalty (yes, I know medium and large are barely used either, but that's a whole different matter). A class restricted to small shields would be able to make them more useful.

There are only 2 Notable Bucklers in BG1
Kiel's Buckler +1 Armor Class -1 Piercing and Missile Armor Class, +1 Dex
Buckly's Buckler +1 Armor Class -1 Piercing and Missile, +1Con

Note Both only Grant ONE armor Class against Slashing and Bludgeoning and non Against the rest.

Baldurs gate 2 has a few Bucklers +2 and +3 Who actually grant more AC ...still not against Missiles and nothing else. no Stat Boosts no fancy , nothing.

Shield And Weapon works with Bucklers.

even if you use Kiels or Bucklys , spending your Point in single weapon style will possible be better in the long run, or just another weapon..

personally then i have a CHARNAME who can only use Bucklers i use Bucklys +con book , the natural regeneration eases up on your Healer.

if you have problems with enemy Archers Mowing down your people do what i do
Grab Kagain (he naturally heals hp during travel and sleep) give him the Boots and Belt with Piercing/Missle armor Bonus and let him walk ahead for a couple Meter since enemy's will attack the first thing they see... later trade the boots for the haste one and get the anti-missile shield in Baldurs gate so the running ahead happens automatic ... he never gets hit by arrows expect the lucky 20 rolls..
  • The Rogue Rebalancing mod adds some great bucklers, if you're willing to mod your game to increase options.

I will be using bucklers for the first time because of the new UI.

I never tried to use a buckler. Single-Weapon Style gives me a flat -1 AC against all attacks and even boosts my crit chance. Offensive and defensive in one go!

True , but that single weapon style does Squat if you Sling/Dart/Throwing Dagger's away and there are still 3 Classes Limited to them...

    Aye. For a sling/dart user, I like Kiel's Buckler. +1 AC and +1 Dex.

For a dwarf or half orc Buckley's Buckler gives unlimited healing. Even after getting 20Con I keep the buckler to speed things up. It's not really used for combat though.

I do wish that there was a way to switch off hand slots. So a thief could go from Kiel's Buckler to one handed or a dwarf could go from Buckley's to dual wielding without going through the inventory screen.

That's true. But if you're sitting at range, the main threat you should probably have to worry about is ranged attacks. Bucklers don't help you at all in that department. And Sword and Shield style doesn't work with ranged weapons either, so you can't use that to balance out the problem.

After ~20 years they finally allowed us to used dual weapons with missile weapons. I think you're asking too much. Maybe in 2036 xD

Sword and Shield does "edit" NOT Work with Bucklers , while using a Sling / Throwing Daggers / Hammers /Axes and Darts. still +1dex or +1con are great so if you have one of those wear them

My Gnome Cleric/Illusionist has a rank in Sword and Shield, and is using a sling, but doesn't get the extra missile defense unless I switch to a melee weapon, that's why I said that. It's quite possible I'm just miss reading the modifiers.

Also, you can take SoD into consideration, where there's

multiple +2 bucklers, a certain one of which shows up in BG2, if you got it in SoD

So yeah, I find myself appreciating them more and more.

gasp , i excuse myself , i just tested it on a Naked character only wearing a Buckler and a sling.

the Bonus isn't showing so i guess i was wrong. sorry for adding confusion.

But for a buckler +1 would it give:
    A: +2AC vs slashing/bludgeoning and nothing vs missile/piercing, or
B: +2AC vs slashing/bludgeoning and +1 vs missile/piercing (getting the enchantment, but not the shield bonus)

If the latter, then it's better than single weapon style defensively (with no crit threat bonus) even with no proficiency, and works while using ranged weapons (without the proficiency)

Kiels and Bucklys are called +1 but only give one AC not two, also all bucklers dont provide any AC to missiles or piercing no matter if +1/2/3
