Question about NPC levelups

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
If I ditch an NPC to grab a new one, and then come back for the ditched NPC later, do they gain the experience that was gained while killing/adventuring without them?

    Once you've brought the NPC back into the party, select them and use the console command:
    C:SetCurrentXP("[Number]")

    That way you can bring them up to the level of the rest of the party.
