Can't change difficulty setting

in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear
I was playing on Core Rules until chapter 10, when I hit a fight where I couldn't keep Rasaad alive. I changed the difficulty level to Easy just for that encounter (he was trying my patience) - when I went to change back, I found the difficulty scale was completely immobile - I was stuck on Easy for the rest of the game. Tried going back to an earlier save etc, but no joy.
