How do you beat Tristian at Coroniir?

in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear
Trying to get his holy symbol but every time I challenge him I lose

    I swigged potions of genius and insight just in case, and it worked... so I guess it checks one of the stats (Wisdom or Intelligence).

    If you don't have the stats to beat him then you can get Dynaheir, Neera or Edwin to play for you.

    used potion of genius and couldn't beat him with 15 int but a potion of insight to give me 18 wisdom worked!
