Best Turn-Based RPGs you've played?

Hello Everyone,

I've always loved turn-based RPGs. I love the strategy involved in them. However I actually haven't PLAYED that many of them. Pretty much just Master of Magic (Legendary!) and the new King's Bounty. I actually never played some of the great ones like the Heroes of Might and Magic series.

Anyway, there are so many out there. Thanks to gog.com I have many many options as well. So I was wondering which ones you guys recommend.

top pick: Knights of the Chalice http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/

Runner up: Temple Elemental Evil and Keep on the Borderlands http://www.co8.org/forum/

Wizardry series, Arcanum perhaps, Realms of Arkania

http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com has a cubic shitton of em, all very similar.

Older ones (aka crappy graphics) SSi gold box games, Dark Sun Shattered Lands, tons of these too.

Disqualified, i presume: If you call Pausing turn-based, then the BGs and NWNs, PST, IWD

As Metal_Hurlant suggested, Fallout 1 and 2 is amazing turn based RPG's.
The best I've ever played, bar none.

Now, whether you can get past the ancient graphics in the games is another thing, but it's certainly worth it.
Graphics is very similar to the Baldur's Gate series, but there's a whole lot less green, since the game takes place in a post apocalypse world.

Also, I'm not aware if there's any mods similar to Tutu and the Widescreen mod for Baldur's Gate.

The game uses an isometric view like the BG series, but it uses it's own amazing PERK system instead of the AD&D rules.
You may be familiar with this system, as they use a variant in the (now) more famous games Fallout 3 and Fallout 3: Las Vegas, but those games doesn't use true turn based combat, and are first or third person 3D shooters. But great games in their own right. (Still RPG's though).

For me, Fallout 1 & 2 is the pinnacle of turn based RPG's, and I still play them from time to time.

Here's a quick link to various YouTube videos of Fallout 1 gameplay to piqué your interest:

    Aargh!
The forums won't let me edit my posts on the iPad.
Wanted to replace the long and unwieldy link from my previous post with a more informative one.
Here's a guy with lots of "Let's Play Fallout 1" videos:

I googled mods and widescreen mods on fallout 1&2, and it turns out there's some pretty good mods out there.
And a working widescreen mod, although its important to read the readme.txt to get it working properly.

You can get both games on GOG.com and the forums there will link you to the mods if you should decide to try the games.
The best thing is that both games are dirt cheap!

The Temple of Elemental Evil is the only turn-based game I played. The Circle of Eight mod team did an outstanding job of cleaning up Atari's rush job and turned it into everything it was supposed to be and more. The turn-based style makes for a completely different feel than BG/IWD, but it allows for a lot of strategizing, if that's what you're looking for.

The original Final Fantasy Tactics had an excellent storyline and rock solid gameplay.
Master of Orion 1 and 2 (but not 3) are excellent. They're mostly just turn based strategy titles (not much RP), but they're very similar to Master of Magic, which is why I brought them up.
X-Com is fantastic and there's a new version with more RP elements coming out early next month. The demo's available on Steam and it's great.

@Bytebrain It does -- but you gotta hit the right spot. The edit button is hidden in the upper right hand corner of each post an is only revealed when a user mouses-over.

To find it, look at your post. Tap the area around the *upper right hand corner* (directly opposite your username). Sometimes it takes a few taps to find it, but it's there and you can edit your posts.

    @Brude
    Thank you. :-)
I was aware of it, but it came up with an error for me, but I figured out, just now, that it's because I don't use Safari Browser on my iPad.. :-)
    Works perfectly fine in Safari..
Was using an otherwise awesome browser called iCabMobile. Not so awesome in compatability in this situation though... :-)

possibly Wizardry 8 and ToEE, but I have not played any of those old school rpgs before 2000 except for BG and PS:T. I heard there are a lot of good TB rpgs in 90s.

Man, it's so nice to see a bit of love for wizardry 8 here.

Thanks for all of the replies, guys. Great information. I should have mentioned that I have played the fallout series. To death in fact. I absolutely love it.

I suppose what I was most referring to was turn based FANTASY, maybe? I guess the term RPG completely changed the complexion. I'm looking for games like the heroes of might and magic series, master of magic, Age of wonders series, etc.

A few notes on the titles already mentioned. Wizardry 8 is classic. Sir-Tech is one of my very favourite developers. In fact, speaking of turn based, I still play Jagged Alliance 1 and 2 all the time. LOVE those games.

I never played much Chrono Trigger. Though I played the heck out of the Final Fantasy NES and SNES titles.

The Dark Sun Shattered Lands video was neat! Never heard of that one.

    In order of preference:

    Fallout 1
    BG 1
    Fallout 2
    BG 2

But why choose favorites? Play them all!

I love how demented the Fallout/Fallout 2 universe was. You could plant dynamite on your foes. You could murder and pillage ..and worse. They even had a child killer badge for the psychos! Oh, and you had a dog --- that was destined to die. The game had so much heart, considering its setting. There'll never be another one.

Might and Magic 6,7, and 8. Especially 6.
  • j0lssonij0lssoni Member Posts: 53
    HoMM 2 & 3, Final Fantasy X and Fallout 1 & 2
  • Might and Magic 6,7, and 8. Especially 6.

Might and Magic 7 is my personal favourite, but it's the one of the three that I played first. I also think 8 is interesting since you only make one character, and the rest are sort of like hirelings.

I also think Might and Magic 2 for genesis is a great game. In it, characters gain multiple attacks per swing like in d&d too once they gain a high enogh level, which I thought was pretty cool.

I also think King's Bounty is a great game, which is by the same creator as the Might and Magic series.

I think the best versions of these games are on the Sega Genesis. There's also Warriors of the Eternal Sun for the Genesis, a great dnd game too imo.

Already mentioned, but I have enjoyed

    MM6 and MM7 (I have yet to purchase MM8)
Avadon: The Black Fortress (Still Playing Through)
Escape from Avernum (I also bought Avernum 4, 5, and 6 - on my list to play)

Shoot, I just fired up my Gog.com version of MM6, thinking to try to make a screenshot. I couldn't figure out any way to make a screenie, but damned if I didn't get hooked in! And I was having a really great time with Torchlight 2, but now I'm thinking I might get distracted and do my umpteenth MM6 run.

I just created a pally out of bearded "choose me or suffer" guy, and named him Anomen, an archer/rogue out of red-haired "I'll be good for your party" guy, and named him Rafe, and a druid out of the green-clad blonde staff chick, and named her Jaheira. I would have taken "Zoltan", and named him "Coran", but I've played that template every time I've ever played. I always used to take the shirtless, eye-patched, "big guy", and called him Minsc. So, I'm trying to choose some templates I've never used before to give it some new flavor.

Props for shining force. Great game. Also loved Shining in the Darkness. Played the heck out of that way back when.

I would put my best Turn-Based RPGs like this (NOTE: NWN, IWD and BG do not count, since they mix the turns into real time.) The games are in no specific order, just from the top of my mind.

    The Temple of Elemental Evil
    Fallout 1 & 2
    Jagged Alliance 2
X-Com / UFO 1 & 3 (though, I must admit that I played the third game in real time mode, so... guilty.)
