How do I open the small door in the sewer? [spoiler]

I'm right at the end of a SoD playthrough and I'm exploring the sewer that I've been dumped in to leave the city. At the far right side of the map there's a door in the rock which says (when I click on it):

"This small door hidden in the rock has a keyhole in it"

Am I supposed to be able to open it? If so, how do I get the key?

    Nevermind, it's impossible to get the key if you've been escorted out by the flaming fist. If you kill the officer instead, you end up in the sewers and can find the key there.

    Knock works. Nothing really useful in there if I remember.

    No, there isn't anything useful in there as it happens, just a random selection of gems and scrolls (which are a bit pointless given that the next area is where the game ends). I couldn't use Knock in this case as I wasn't playing a mage.

    The key is in a deadbody in the sewer tunnels, not held by the guard, but as said before its full of thrash.

    If you defend your character (in the trial conducted by Duke Belt) by mentioning several (I think at least four) good acts you performed earlier in the game, then (during your escape) you're conducted directly to the Lake Cavern at the end of the sewers (and you don't get the option to backtrack into the sewers). This way, you don't find the key to the cache in the rock.

    If you decline to mention (or have not performed) enough good acts, then your escape starts at the entrance to the sewers (instead of the exit), and you have to fight your way through the sewers to the Lake Cavern. This way, you'll find the key to the cache (on a corpse in the sewers).

    As has already been mentioned, there's nothing important in the cache, so good guys aren't missing out on anything, except that they're left wondering what might have been in it.

    Given that it's also the end of the game and everything (gear, money, reputation etc.) is reset in BG2, the only thing that would be useful is one of the Tomes that increase your stats permanently (or a decent scroll if you are playing a mage).

    So why is it there?

    If the answer is "Simply to annoy those who cannot open it and are thus left wondering what it might hold", I will accept that. I couldn't open it in my game.
