Thoughts about Khalid and question (spoiler)

Hi I'm new. I'm enjoying the game, not very keen on the new npcs but generally having a good time with it all. Might try them a bit more next playthrough.
I've just finished the battle at Bridgeport. Where can I find the spiders silk that Khalid wants as a gift for Jaheira? I have a awful feeling I have missed it or something in another area I did previously?? I might have even found it and discarded it, argh.
Also, I tried many different ways to do the Bridgefort battle. I like the version where Khalid joins the party and you can request him to make the speech, but when that happens, the Flaming Fist don't help us and it's too hard.
So, I do the version where Khalid fights but is not part of the party but the flaming fist show up.
I had to reload because he died (outside the party) Jaheira didnt acknowledge his death which I thought was very odd.
What are other peoples experiences with Khalid at Bridgefort? I had to keep a close eye on him to make sure he didn't die.
Also, I just saw a ridiculously painful scene with him and Dyanheir. She praised him for his actions during the battle, and he was very modest about it of course. Then she praised his humble nature saying 'I can see what Jaheira sees in thee' then 'thou art blushing how adorable' Then Minsc chimes in too. And there was also one with Jaheira and Dyanheir talking about looking after their men on the road.
Knowing what will happen to them in BG2 made that painful!
