Say what? Not sure I get what you mean.

real difficulty setting pls,i do not want to restrict myself to nonsense such as soloing or playing at x level even if i have twice the xp required to level-up.

give us an epic challenge worthy of an epic party!

This game is played on AD&D standard rule. The highest diff is the insane difficulty where damage done to party is doubled. Now a regular game in insane difficulty is actually very easy. If you want a challenge, you can try out the tactics mod. But you probably need to dial down your difficulty notch.

and probably learn new ways to combat challenges as most of the old tactics no longer work as well, for one reason or another...

for example Tactics Bandit Camp with Improved Call for Help is rough for a low-mid level group, they just swarm you, and swarm you hard, even with Web/Fireball and other such tactics, the fight can be rough, and if you don't have 3rd level spells or lack fireball (1st scroll I know of is IN the bandit camp), it's even worse :P...

Also learned today 30 bandits vs a -13 AC vs Ranged and the bandits win, as they simply roll enough natural 20's...lol

I'm not sure if I want to continue this challenge. Playing the rest of soa seems like a chore. Also, if I continue to tob, I think the npcs that are not in the party when I beat Irenicus will get level up.
  • AmardarialAmardarial Member Posts: 270
@bbear, do it! Also ToB just gives you the xp if you load a saved game, so they would all be whatever level they were at end of SoA...

but seriously want to see how the rest plays out!

Round 10: Restore Soul + ToB

Now that Watcher's Keep is completed, I returned to the main quest. Before completing SoA, I just had to duke it out against the cowled wizards:

    image

The battles with Bodhi and vampires minions were easy. I have been saving up the protection against undead scrolls. Bodhi just stood there and died.

    In Suldanessellar, another dead dragon:

    image

The Irenicus mage battle was also easy. When I had Vicky w/ 100% magic resistance, I dont see how she could lose.

In the Nine Hells, I chose all the good paths. In the self sacrifice trial, I managed to have the held victim (Mazzy with the speed boot) to open the last door before she was held. Thus my main character didnt lose a Dex point. This trick comes from the DSimpson's gamesfaq BG2 walkthrough from a user who I forgot his name.)

At the final battle, Irenicus the ravager summoned 4 demons. The battle was not difficult. My party hid in one corner and Irenicus just went after me solo. Just had to watch out for his death spell.

My character's status at the beginning of ToB:

    image

O, I fought with Illsaera the Quick. She lived up to her nickname cuz she died w/in 3 rounds. I think this is because ToB boss battle scales with the party's level. Since my party is lvl 8 average, she shows up w/ no supports.

Also, when I summon the npcs, they all leveled up about 4-5 levels. I guess I'll just stick w/ my SoA party for the rest of ToB.

Round 11: Saradush + Siege Camp

The city of Saradush was under sieged and my party being heroic, once again had to rescue this town from the great evils fire giant Yaga-Shura and the orc Gromnir. Gromnir was easily destroyed given the fact that his 2 wizards died before they could cast a single spell.

On the other hand, Yaga-Shura and his minions were a force to be reckon with. At the Fire Mountain, I was twice rushed by a party of fire giants in the lower ground. Many of my meat shields wand monsters were sacrificed and corpses were everywhere. Here is the image of about 1/3 of the carnage:

    image

The battle at the siege camp was Tough. Yaga-Shura's forces would spawn everywhere on the map. Since my fighters Mazzy and Korgan were at lvl 8, they had trouble hitting the enemies. My party was severely overwhelmed and they had to flee to avoid some of the deadlier spawns (namely fire giants). In the end, Edwin saved the day. Imoen gave Edwin a scroll of timestop and 3 scrolls of horrid wilting she snatched from the wizard from Saradush and Edwin cast them in due time. After the spells were cast, my party finally had an opening on Yaga-Shura...for about 5 seconds...enough to rushed him melee and spells to end his existence. The Solar then whisked my party away to safety from new spawns.

    image

After arriving at Amkethran city, I went back to the portal to faced my evil self from the alternate universe. O boy, this was the TOUGHEST battle in my low level challenge. I had to reload several times because my party kept dying. The room was difficult to maneuver and there was NO escape. No more exploits where I could open or close the door. Even if my party turned invisible, they could still target my pc for some reason. And so, my pc had to run around in circles to avoid being killed by my evil self. Why did my other self hated me so much? He would bypass everyone in his path to try to kill me. Meanwhile, the evil archer Angleo and fighter Tamoko killed Mazzy and Viconia (guess the romance ended there...sigh).

Then the tide of the battle began to turn. Edwin casted another timestop and my last 2 horrid wilting scrolls, while Korgan and Imoen finally destroyed Tamoko. Wands of monsters were exploited to the fullest and brought me some valuable time. Imoen used the rod of resurrection to revive the fallen. Once I had my party back, Angelo was shot while he was distracted by my meat shields. Then the mage Semje was next.

Finally, only one opponent remained. I built a wall of summoned monsters around my evil self and he just stood there unable to reach my main character. For a while he was impervious to the party's arrows because apparently my npcs needed to roll a 20 in order to hit him! This time Imoen saved the day. She cast Greater Malision and used the wand of paralyzation (save at -4).

Who's next? I feel like slaying dragons.

I just have to say that this is a great read! I keep coming back to the forums to read this :) I've never realised the power of wands/potions/scrolls. Amazing. And also the tactical know-how. From where I'm sitting this is quite impressive!

Yea Ive been doing the same, I enjoy the read, and seeing how things go..

    Round 12: Abazigal + Sendai

In my regular BG2 ToB games, I always thought that Abazigal was the hardest of the Five. Dragons hit hard and fast and do massive area damage attacks. In a low level challenge, getting physically mauled by a dragon is basically instant death. Three attacks per round at 30 damages per attack means that victim cannot outlast more than 2 rounds (except if the target is the sword). Furthermore, ToB dragons target more intelligently than the SoA dragons and frequently they would target whoever is attacking/spellcasting at it (instead of nearest opponent). Finally, they have a better repetoire of spell defenses and tricks at their disposal.

Draconis' dragon form was a beast (the human form was laughable). First of all, the battlefield was a large outdoor, which meant my party could not exploit narrow archway to avoid physical attacks. Draconis liked to hit and run, which was very annoying cuz my pc tank had to lure it to my party or my party had to chase it. It took me a few reloads to master the luring strategy on Draconis such that it would only target my summon meat shields.

The key tactic fighting against ToB dragons is the mage spell Power Word Blind. Luckily, Imoen had snatched 2 copies earlier from the wizard merchant in Saradush. Once it was blinded (for 6 rounds), Draconis just sit there on the battlefield. However I had to watch out when he was badly injured because he would slip a heal spell on himself!

Dead Draconis with healing animation (haha he also got me there):
    image

The Green Dragon guarding Abazigal's lair. Had to release it from its geas.
    image

For Abazigal, luck was essential in this battle. At the moment of the dragon transformation, I had a 2 seconds window to save the game (and for the matter I could teleport back to the portal if I wished)! Abazigal was a beast and I must avoid its physical attacks at all cost. The trick was to have the pc (abazigal would target the pc only if no other npc was at his line of sight) dashed to the entrance. Normally, Abazigal could still physically attack anyone at the entrance. However if he used Wing Buffet, then the person would flied off to the narrow tip of the entrance and became out of range from physical attack.

From there, I had my mages do the normal routine. After casting my last power word blind scroll, Abazigal became another sitting luck like his son Draconis. Again at the end, I had to disrupt his Heal spell. The difficult part about Abazigal was that if my party killed it too quickly, the game would never trigger the script. It was frustrating that I had to reload 3 times because he refused to die. The 3rd time was the charm.
    image

Sendai was a pushover. Rolled her over like a pancake. Range attacks were enough. Incidentally, I wasnt sure why 2 of her statues were under fear status after some attacks. Does the throwing axe K'logarath+4 cause fear (it was not listed in the description)?
    image

The 3rd and 4th abyssal challenges were easy. The slayer would Only target my pc and so he just ran around the room in circle. For the 4th challenge, since my pc was a barbarian (although I did have the gargoyle boot), he was immune to backstabs.

And the game is finally coming to the end. My godhood awaits.

    Round 13: Balthazar

In terms of the difficulty of the battle, I would rank him #3 after Yaga-Shura (#2) and Abazigal (#1). The only problem I had with my low level party was damage output. Since I only had Imoen and Edwin, they could not do enough magic damage to kill Balthazar. Also I had to worry about Balthazar's second wind move that healed himself completely. The trick that solved both problems was:

    <img src=http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a622/bbear144/Balthzaar_zpsce7ae17d.png'

And so two more boss battles remain. The 5th challenge the Ravager seemed to be impossible since he summoned a bunch of swords and he has 534 hp!. I dont think I can do that much damage even with a party of 5 mages. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

  • bbearbbear Member Posts: 1,180
Hmmm....it looks like the Ravager is impossible to beat for a low level party. The most that my low level party could do was to damage its health to injured status. I think it's practically immune to everything (even timestop and imprisonment) except blind (I had the wand of cursing).

Imoen could try setting traps, but even with the mercykiller ring, her thief pt on traps was a dismal 25%...Also, I believe there is a limit of 7 traps per map.

    Round 14: Ravager

About the above post...I guess nothing is impossible if you keep going at it. This battle was all about LUCK...victory or defeat depended on whether I could blind the ravager quickly. In my 20ish attempt, I managed to landed blind on ravager the 1st try right after I lowered its magic resistance to 0% and greater malision it (from the cursing wand with no penalty to save). In the background, I had edwin projected image and cast 2 mordenkain sword to distract the bone blades from my party.

After a few rounds of skull traps, Imoen and Edwin cast the Bigby Hand scroll to stun the ravager (both times stunned him too, talk about the odds!) After it's stun, every fighter moved in for the kill. At the end, the mordenkain swords expired and the bone blades attacked my party. I was too excited about getting the Ravager to near death that I ignored Vicky's plead for help. In the end, both Vicky and the Ravager perished. Luckily, Vicky didnt get blown into pieces and I resurrected her.

    image

Now that's over, my pc can rightfully claim his rightful place in the pantheon of gods.

@bbear So we are left with what, the Final ToB Boss? Melesain or whatever her name is?
  • bbearbbear Member Posts: 1,180

@bbear So we are left with what, the Final ToB Boss? Melesain or whatever her name is?

Yep. I still need to get some supplies from the town first. Some spell scrolls that may prove useful are chain contingency's, protection scrolls, imprisonment and wish. Yes, the imprisonment should work nicely on that fallen deva. For wish, i need to get 2 potions of insights because edwin and imoen are not wise enough. I heard that bosses that are immune to regular timestop is not immune to the wish timestop and wish rest is nice.

Also, I have yet to use my 4 mindflayer control circlets. So far, they failed to work on the monsters I wanted to charm.

Does anyone know how to make Spoilers? I want to put a couple images in them so that people dont have to scroll down too much to read posts (I should have asked a long time ago).

After a few tries...this battle is indeed impossible for a low level party. My party was always overwhelmed by the summoned monsters. I think the only solution to beat her is to demolish her magic resistance and blind her. But that takes too long (I need 3 rounds to do that) and I dont have a target to distract her since she can kill any summoned monsters by touch. Also Greater Malision has no effect on her, my chance of landing blind on her from the wand of cursing was pretty slim (no penalty to save).

And in the slim chance that I succeed blinding Melissan, I have to fight her for 4 times. But that's not possible because it takes all of Edwin, Imoen and Vicky's spells to beat her any 1 time and I only have 2 wish scrolls for wish rest.

what about the juggernaut tome? summon that dude to distract her, hence you can only use it once, and she has some sort of affect on that makes it so everytime she hits a low leveled summon monster it instantly dies

I havent tried that. But if memory serve, I think she can kill summons like planetars instantly.

Tell you the truth, I kinda give up on this challenge. I think my low level party has suffered enough (they died over 100+ times, lol).

yeah the mellisan fight was meant for higher level characters, hell it can even be a pain in the ass for level 40 chaps, never mind level 7 ones :)

I believe a mid level 20 party can defeat her easily. Mage 1 spell triggers lower magic resistancex3 and mage 2 power word blind Melissan. Once she stands there like a good girl, the fighters can greater whirlwind attack with gesen shortbows/crossbows/throwing axes. Or another way is just have the thief plants spike traps.

  • sarevok57sarevok57 Member Posts: 6,002
going to need some wish spells so you can rinse lather repeat, and where would the thief plant spike traps? because you cant lay down traps when an enemy is around, and im pretty sure that the mellisan fighting area is blocked off when you do those little side fights ( oh and by the way, normal thief traps actually deal more damage than the spike trap, because i believe that the normal thief trap does level d8 damage, while spike only does 20d6, but then again if you have a f/m/t the spike trap will do more damage than your thief trap if you take the ability at 3 000 000 xp

1 - The area isn't blocked off. You can finish the side fight, not click the pool and go plant the traps.

2 - The HLA traps are much more powerful than the normal thief trap. I just checked with a level 40 thief and the normal traps did damage in the 30-40 type of range.

I think it may be possible to win...if I switch the really low level ppl. Korgan and Mazzy are just baggage in the final battle. If I get 2 more mages like Nalia (lv 13) and Aerie (lv 10, lv 11 M/C), then blind can be cast in end of 1st round. Also, more mages means the 2 wish scrolls should be enough for wish rest.
  • AHFAHF Member Posts: 1,376
Using a projected image scroll or a simulcrum scroll for a mage holding the 2 wish scrolls will give you extra wish rests as well (since they will have 2 shots at resting and won't use up the wish scrolls).

Do it! You can do it! If not, level everybody up and FINISH HER!
  • bbearbbear Member Posts: 1,180
Due to the success (or failure?) of this challenge, I'm going to restart with the intention of beating Melissan at the end. I believe the method is collect the necessary items so that the final boss battle can be doable. In the previous game, the final boss is impossible because Melissan created swarms of tough monsters. Since my party was average level 8, they were annihilated very quickly. If I can disable her at the beginning of each battle, then the game shouldnt be a problem. Essential items are:

-Scrolls of Power Word Blind (3 available throughout the game, perhaps I'll get lucky with random treasure)
-Scrolls of Spell Trigger (at least 3)
-Scrolls of Spell Sequencer (optional, common item)

The tactics is to have Imoen (lv11) casts Spell Trigger (x3 Lower Magic Resistance), npc1 an npc 2 use the wand spell striking - pierce magic to shred Melissan's magic resistance to 0%. Then Edwin casts Power Word Blind and Melissan becomes a sitting duck. Then for 6 rounds, my party will cast skull traps and Melissan should be dead. Rinse and repeat for 4 battles. For the first battle, I can either use the wand of curse (10% chance of blinding her) or fake talk her (fake talk only works in the first battle).

I decided to play an Inquisitor this time with better stats than Keldorn. Inquisitors get 2x Dispel Magic at twice the levels and 2x True Sight (very useful since no npc except Cernd (lv9) can cast True Seeing and I'm not going to use Cernd). The disadvantage is nonexistent since 1) Potions are abundant, 2) Can't cast priest spells at level 7 anyway, 3) there are gazillion ways of killing undeads. In addition, inquisitor gets immunity to charm and hold person, which is a pretty good bonus.

For proficiency points, I put 2 on Two-Handed Swords, 2 on Staffs, 1 on Crossbow and 1 on Two Handed Weapon Style. After a few minutes, I rolled this guy:
