Sudden XP - is this normal?

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Hi, This is my first imported game character from BG:EE to BG2:EE. I seem to be getting lots of XP suddenly when I recruit new characters. I started at 160,000 and I'll I've done since I started is go straight to collect the 4 companions I wanted yet I now have 250,000. It was particularly noticeable when I recruited the last one and we all dinged a level.

Is this normal?
