Strange Issue Related to Custom Portraits for NPCs & All Custom NPC Portrait Overrides?

Greetings all. So I was just sort of poking the bear here a bit with a question that makes no sense to me (as a software engineer). Today I decided to finally take on the task of supplying custom portraits for some of the NPCs in Baldur's Gate 1/SOD so that my friend and I could enjoy them together in multiplayer. I ended up making a [NPCNAME]L and [NPCNAME]M bmp file for each one and in my game, both small and large images work just fine.
When I pass the files to him and he dispenses them into his own portrait folder--again, same version of the game I have, they don't work. On a hunch I tell him to rename the [NPCNAME]M to [NPCNAME]S and boom, his work. So now for MP I have to run with [NPCNAME]L, M, and S, as he does, so we both can enjoy the same experience.
I don't quite get why this or how this would happen, if I have the same version he does, then we both have the exact same code base--unless it's something region specific that is specifically coded into the game (as I am NA and he is EU)? Strange. Strange indeed...

Edit: Oh, I'd also like to request the Override Names for ALL NPCs in ALL Beamdog games if someone is privy for this information.
