There is no way to retain my imported save items?

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I try the pause and drop equipment trick, but it seems no longer work. So I have no way to retain my imported save items? I like some of the SoD items :(

    If you import a SoD game with some specific items found, you'll find them again (about 10 of them carry over to BG2EE this way) in your playthrough. But you'll never get to import any items from SoD that simply aren't present in BG2EE as well as the pause upon start which no longer works in EE.
