@rapsam2003 I don't know the principle. I thought Jaheira romance was forwarding the Harper quest.
Anomen has his own quest, but Aerie and Viconia do not. It's just a way of fleshing them and the PC out more. It's called an RPG for a reason.
Anomen has his own quest regardless of whether you romance him. Just pointing that out to avoid confusion.
But, yeah, pretty much. People like party interactions. People like romances. Hell, for many classic cRPG players, the BG2 romances defined what a romance should be. Granted, the tech for video cutscenes on the scale of Mass Effect romances wasn't in existence yet, but the way the relationships developed was amazing. Very few games have even come close to that!
On the topic of Jaheira, her romance ties in with the Harper quest (same as how Anomen's romance ties in with his quest). But, you don't need to be romancing her to advance the Harper quest. She won't even romance someone who is the following: male and a Human, Half-elf, Elf or Halfling. (Never got why Halfing fit in there. Whatever.) You can still do her questline if you're not romancing her.
So. Do I need to romance him or not to get to these demon quests?
No. As with all the other NPCs that have a romance, romancing them is only available if you fit the qualifications. The quests are always available, and the quests tie in with the romance.
It's like making a sandwich. I can make a "ham and cheese sandwich". I can also put lettuce on this sandwich, and the same ham and cheese sandwich is still a ham and cheese sandwich. I just added lettuce to it, because I wanted an extra item. Removing the lettuce doesn't cause the ham and cheese sandwich to no longer be a ham and cheese sandwich.
I'm asking because in my last replay I screwed up my romance with Jaheira and the harper quest didn't continue.
I think you're mixing up the harper quest (the one involving Xzar) and her romance quests. Her romance quests do also involve Harpers. But the quest that ANYONE can get, regardless of romance, is the quest you get from Xzar.
Jaheira's harper quests continue even without the romance. She dumped my pc after the hostage incident as I have played a bit cowardly. Yet she still saw my pc as a friend and ally and defended him in Harper trials to come, but with slightly different dialogues than the romance.
@rapsam2003 no, the last episode of the quest was the ambush when they take Jaheira hostage. After that the dialogues just stoped. The globals indicated the romance was still active, yet nothing happened.

Oh, I see what you mean.
Um...I'm not sure; I don't think you broke anything. You may just have to wait. Jaheira's stuff is the longest & most involved quest line, whether you romance her or not.

As far as I know, it was still present pre-2.0. Not sure if it's been fixed.
