I can select my custom portraits just fine, and they show up on the character info page. But the small portrait on the main game screen is wrong. It shows up as the bald barbarian.

Side note: How do I turn off the black outline on character sprites?

You can turn off the black sprite outlines in the options menu under graphics if I'm not mistaken.

After some messing around, I've figured out the problem. Whatever you did to get custom portraits in the normal list messed everything up. If I have an S, M, and L portrait in my portrait folder, the portrait will show up three times in the list, but only the L sized portrait. Also, the game will use the M portrait (What is this even used for?) for the S portrait. But if I don't have an M portrait, on the gameplay screen I'll get the wrong portrait or none at all.
