Potion of absorbtion bug?

I had a level 3 fighter approach the bunch of ogres/ogre berserkers and orgrillions in the coast map just south of Candlekeep.
My fighter had 18 dex, plate mail, ring of protection, belt of -4 blunt chance to hit, AND he had consumed a potion of absorption. Thus he should have a -14 modifier on blunt damage on top of his ~ -2 AC from his outfit.
This AC should only allow for critical hits to go in. Yet I was repeatedly hit with non-critical hits. I basically couldn't tank them and had to walk away pretty fast.
I've also experienced this in an earlier playthrough where I had Minsc approach the ogre berserker in the bridge gang on the map just north of the Gnoll fortress. Despite having the potion of absorption, the ogre berserker repeatedly hit him without critical hits, and I had to pull him back very quickly.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I'm on Android, (version 1.3) and I use no mods.

Plus crushing damage has more of an 'impact' sound upon hit. It changes somewhat with the armor worn, but is decidedly different than the 'slice' sound of slashing weapons or the 'snikt!' sound of piercing weapons. These hit sounds are different between bg1 and 2, too, and I prefer bg2 ones, especially the piercing damage sound is more fleshy and satisfying in bg2.
Ogres, ogrillions all use crushing attacks. Ogre berserkers may be using two handers as they drop them, but they may also use a custom ogre weapon that is undroppable, and the two hander is just for show and in case Minsc's two hander breaks in the wilderness. I need to check my bg1 installation. In my modded bg2 they use undroppable ogre1 weapon which is crushing 1-10 damage, +1 enchanted. However I am sure it is different than bg1.
