Hide in plain sight means you can stealth while being seen by enemy - normally, it would require the thief to be out of visual range of enemy to attempt stealth.

Shadowstep becomes available as a special ability on level 5.

One can´t backstab with a bow. Only with melee weapons shadowdancer is able to put stars in. Furthermore, the shadowdancer is able to backstab only after gaining level 5. To make succesful backstab, you´ll first need to stealth, and then move your character literally to the back of an enemy you´re going to backstab, and finally to attack with a melee weapon.

Well, the shadowdancer can backstab from level one. The damage bonus is one less than unkitted thieves and so it only starts kicking in at level 5, but you still get the thaco bonus, iirc. Would you agree @tarlugn?

Well, suppose that works, though I started backstabbing at lvl 5, as the shadowdancer gets the first backstab multiplier 2x. I´m not actually sure is the thaco bonus shown ever anywhere, and I´m just guessing it to be +4 due to attacking invisible, but if that is the case, I´d like to know does it apply to ranged attacks, or only to melee attacks?

Attacking from invisibility gives +4 to hit for everyone, not just thieves. Thieves do backstab multiplier in damage if their melee-invisibility attack connects. Ranged attacks also enjoy +4 to hit from invisibilty, IIRC, however obviously you can not backstab with ranged attacks.
