in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
I think the one in the bedroom. I *Cannot* open it. I have Imoen at 6th level *and* armed with a potion of insight, giving her an Open Lock of 80% & I *Still* keep failing to open it!

Why?!

    That would be because that chest requires an even higher lockpicking score. Maybe a hundred? or 95? I don't even know, it's just crazy high. And there is a knock scroll right next to it but if you use it right away you wont able to learn the spell. Combine that with what's actually in that chest and I'd say there's a rather sadistic level designer at work here.

    it requires 90 ( sometimes 85 works) and it contains a wand
    I think the reason why it requires such a high lock pick is because the item in there can be quite potent if used at the right time

    A Potion of Insight isn't going to help much with picking locks.

    A potion of perception, a potion of mind focusing, or a potion of master thievery would all assist here. Insight just boosts your wisdom.

    Note that you get a knock scroll on the same level. I think it is the first non random drop scroll. So it is not really a problen if you have a mage or bard.

    You can also up the dex of your rogue (mind focussing, draw upon holy might), or, with rogue rebalance, use the belt sold by Thunderhammer.

    Also, the spell Luck can increase your thieving skills a bit. You can add it to the mix.

    That chest can be smashed open by someone with high strength (can't remember whether 22 or 23 is needed), although there's another chest on the same level that does require magic or thief ability rather than brute strength.

    i've opened it with Imoen with open locks at 80 + a potion of master thievery ...

    There's a potion of mater thievery next room over... as well as the already mentioned Knock scroll if that still doesn't cut it. But honestly, if your thief at that point doesn't have a natural 50 pts lockpick, you just have to leave that chest behind. (or delay flooding the mine and come back for it... but it's *really* not worth it.)
