identifying items

what determents the fact whether an item can be id immediatly or aquires the use of scroll or spell?

wisdom or int or is it a combo or something else?

i'm playing a party with only edwin as a wizard. he cant use the id spell. so i have to go back and forth between stores and temples to id and sell.

Wisdom and Intelligence contribute to your LORE score, which is what allows you to identify an item without using spells or scrolls. Every class has a base LORE score they get as they level up, 1 for most classes, 3 for Rogues and Mages, 5 for Blades and 10 for other Bards.

If you have the space in your party, consider snagging a Bard. With their high LORE, they can identify a lot of things, and if they can't, they can learn the Identify spell and work it from there.

so if i understand it right. You have to have it id at least once before you can auto id.

@joliekiller not really. As you progress trough game and level up, your lore increases. You usually can identify some lower tier potions or arrows with almost any character. However, with low lore score you will have hard time to identify anything. BG is not like a traditional roguelike - you use the potion and you identify the potion immediately throughout the game. In BG you have to identify every single item in order to know what it does. Here are couple of ways how you identify stuff -
    • Identify it using an Identify skill by any of your mages
    • Identify it by using a service from almost any merchant/priest
    • Give it to your bard and hope your lore score is high enough to identify it automatically

No, each item has a lore level. If the character's Lore is higher than that number, then they can identify it.

@BillyYank is it possible to see the lore level of an item somewhere?

Not within the game. You could use Near Infinity or maybe EEKeeper to look at the .itm file.

is there an option in eekeper to change your lore? i cant seem to find it.
Near infinity is a programming language right? or something like that

Near Infinity is an editor for the games' data files.

@DevardKrown oh, thanks. I did not know that lore requirements are based on item type. I always figured that each unique artifact has it different. This proves me wrong. Basically, bard with 100 lore is able to identify anything that comes on his way. Sweet!
