Now that I have less time to play these days, I usually find myself picking the evil option of, killing the npc for the quest item, instead of doing an errand for it. So it seems like if your pressed for time you wind up taking more evil options. Also along the same lines, some random npc needs immediate help and im like bleh whatever im not helping you weakling and boom more evil and less meaningless errands. By the end of the game im still strong as ever.
For an example of evil characters (and a REALLY long playthrough) I can recommend" Mynameisnotlilly" a Youtube Let's Player who plays through Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and TOB (& even some of NWN) as an evil mage. Very entertaining with excellent roleplaying and character development, in my opinion.
