orosiusorosius Member Posts: 45
Ide like a fighter proficient with a weapon while learning mage for the buff/defensive spells such as blur and mirror image, etc. When do u guys usually leave fighter and dual to mage for said build.

In BG1, level 3 to gain a new proficiency point. At level 6 you gain another proficiency point, and at level 7 you gain an extra half attack per round, but these are late-game options and leave you playing the majority of the game as just a Fighter then just a Mage, before becoming Fighter/Mage. It's better to just play a Fighter/Mage multi-class than to dual-class that late. So, I think level 3 is the best point to dual-class.

In BG2, level 9 to gain a new proficiency point. I don't know as much about BG2 as I do BG1. Levels 12 and 13 are popular alternatives, but as with levels 6 & 7 in BG1, I think it's too late.

without BG2 EE i advice you to pursue multi-class characters rather than dual class. After BG2 EE launch, the moment to dual will be based on your fighter kit.

Berserker/Mage - at level 4/8 as you get 1 enrage at each 4 levels. You can make it at level 12, but i don't think that's a good idea.

Wizard Slayer/Mage (god's know why) - make it at level 2, you get 1% MRes per level, with luck the game is bugged enough to give 1% MRes per any level you have, be it inside the WS class or not. the other feature is just a 10% of spell failure implication per hit, that doesn't change no matter in which level you take it.
Understand that this dual class prevent you probally of use any wizardry ring, belts, boots, hoods... and there on. I don't know if this kit will block the use of robes.

    Kensai/Mage - Make it at level 9/12.
7 if you just started the game in BG2 and you're lazy and don't want to keep your kensai class inative for long (7 is the starting level of a BG2 pre-made character).
9 you get you +3 to hit and damage (+1 to hit and damage at each 3 levels) and -2 bonus to your speed factor (-1 speed factor at each 4 levels), it's passable.
12 is the best, you get a +4 to hit and damage and a -3 on speed factor, besides the fact that the Kai ability is multiple of 4 also (1 Kai per each 4 levels).
This isn't a dual for BG, you gonna suffer a bit in BG to become a juggernaut of destruction in BG2.

    @Kamuizin

I think most suggest that Kensai/Mage dual at 13 that way they also get the extra 1/2 attack from level 13. And waiting 1 more level ain't that killerat that point.

Fighter/Mage dual at 13 may take a while. Fighter/Thief levels up faster.

in bg 1 i always dual my fighters at level 7 then go into a mage, you only hit level 8 mage, but i usually skill myself with a bow so i can get 3 attacks per round good to hit/ to damage and still have some good spell casting, and when i dual class i do illusionist ( i have vanilla bg1) i think in bg1 illusionist is the best specialist mage because the necromancy spells arent that great although conjurer is probally better but i like the convienence of identify, in bg2 i just import my level 7 fighter that dual into a mage in bg1 and skill him with dagger and give him boomerang/firetooth dagger, and then start putting points on staff, unless you want to do that kensai idea, then level 13 is best by far just like @Dragonspear said and i would dual wield so 3 points on two weapon fighting, and maybe put the rest on axe? ( for axe of the unyielding, plus there are 2 +3 axes at relatively early points in bg2) and that level 13 will give you good hp/ to hit/ to damage for when you need to fight, and you will still grow to levels where you will be casting level 9 spells, i remember even playing a solo game where i was a kensai that dualed over to a mage at level 13 and started to wreck shop, but i got bored of that though, because you can essentially become god mode doing that and the game loses its challenge big time (especially when you get HLAs in athkatla the city before chapter 4 and improved alacrity with robe of vecna and amulet of power make you a pretty crazy power house) but its up to you and your play style

Yea dual classing in BG1 is a pain because by the time you get what you want the game is ending. BG2 is where I would Dual Class if I chose to.

So it sounds like I need to level fighter high enough to get the proficiency points without going way too high in level (around lvl 13?)

When I dual to mage and when my mage is lvl 13 I will be able to get my fighter weapon proficiencies back?

i vaguely remember dual-classing a fighter at level 6 (for the extra proficiency points) and ending up with lvl 6 fighter/lvl 7 mage with over 90 hit points, casting ghost armor on myself and other buffs, equipping platemail and going to town with mastery on the sword.

then when i exported to bg2 and used tenser's transformation he was an absolute beast

@orosius if you dual from fighter at 13th level into mage you'll regain your fighter abilities/proficiencies etc once you reach level 14 in mage.

    It's not that bad, actually.

1.25 Mil for level 13 fighter, 1.5 mil for level 14 mage. 2.75 mil total, so you'd fit in just under the SoA experience cap which I usually hit about Ust-Natha with a full party and WAY before if I'm running solo. You'll also be a mage for that period of time and even a "low level" one can do a lot of good. You'd have a ton of HP relative to any other mage in your party too, so meh.

Mages are the only class which can practically print XP, too. Like @Dragonspear said, kick everyone out of your party after you dual-class and write every last scroll you find. If it's a spell you already know, un-learn it than re-learn it just for XP. Cheesy, but who doesn't like Velveeta, honestly?

@sarevok57 This debate is pointless, blue cheese is where the action is.
  • sarevok57sarevok57 Member Posts: 5,975

  • IsairIsair Member Posts: 217
It's an acquired taste, try it in a teriyaki marinaded beef salad with walnuts. Mmm smelly.

I love Blue Cheese on a Cheeseburger...
  • styggastygga Member Posts: 467
It's absolutely HORRENDOUS tasting in it's "solid form". But melt it, and it's tolerable. Obviously not melted cheese by itself.. like with a burger or what have you.

Safe to say this conversation has moved from cheese to cheese.

@sarevok57 Hold your nose & it's onwards to adventure haha but as @CaptRory said it's great on a burger too, pretty nonthreatening (since you can't see or smell it). Add some bacon, maybe some horseradish or sweet chutney, some avocardo etc... Yeah (he said oddly sensually).

@stygga I often eat huge slices of it on bread, this image shall haunt you.

    Right! Baldur's Gate....

Kick everyone but your romantic interest out of your party and then "Get Thee Some Learnin" aka start scribing scrolls.

I knew said tactic, but the way you worded this made me die of laughter. Get thee some learnin indeed ... ahahah
