DWARVEN DEFENDER vets weigh in plz...

I'm considering making a dd in bg1 with a con of 19 and picking up the tomes then playing all the way to TOB. My plan would be to equip regenerating items such as ring of gaxx, axe of unyielding, etc. and then getting the con bonus from hell trials. Will this allow for crazy regeneration or is there a red line drawn somewhere?

Sounds great, don't forget the con bonus from Lum's machine too :)

Well constitution caps at 25, right? So once that stat gets there, the only other bonuses would be from items that provide regeneration. Do regeneration qualities stack, or does the most powerful one trump?

    I don't think regen stacks but I don't have a reference.

They stack, well at least the rings do. if you wear both rings of regeneration you will get 2 points every 6 seconds. I can'r recall testing that with the axe of the unyielding plus another regen item recently though. Okay, just loaded up a game where I have the axe and the ring of gaxx and it definitely stacks them. I added the normal ring of regeneration and it stacked in too.

Different types of regeneration stacking together was fixed in BG2EE 1.3

It's worth noting that the regen from Con is very slow, so once you have a ring of regeneration, the Ring of Gaxx, or the Axe of the Unyielding, the regen from Con becomes pretty much irrelevant.

Yeah I find the CON regen useful for traveling and healing by the time you arrive wherever you're going, but not much else. And that works with 20 CON.

You'll find out in BG2 that you'll be a lot more sustainable with, say, Defender of Easthaven (Along with innate resistance and defensive stance or hardiness) than with numerous items of regeneration.
You may want to consider a Dwarven Barbarian as well. It ends up better damage-wise while still being so good at tanking that you would not make any difference with a DD. Both DD and Barbarian are unkillable once given the appropriate gear (DD is a little more unkillable but really it makes no difference), a DD will be tankier against physical early game while a barbarian will be better against mages both early and lategame, and will have a better mobility as well. But both are very similar lategame.

Edit: to be "invincible" you'll need some regeneration, but that's the last 10% of the job. Stacking damage resistance without regeneration gives insane sustainability, while regeneration alone is barely noticeable. And the best regeneration items will be Blackrazor and Foebane. Either of these along with damage resistance will allow you to regenerate more than what you are dealt.

really? I was wearing a whole bunch of regen items in ToB and I was regenerating around 2 HP a second or so

EDIT: I just tested it out, with 2 axes of the unyielding and 2 rings of gaxx, and sometimes I was regenerating 4 HP a second, so it still looks like they stack
