Elven chainmail fixed for archers and stalkers...

Ok so thieves and even mages can use elven chainmail and can still hide/ cast spells etc in it... I therefore believe it's an oversight/ poor decision to make it unusable by stalkers and archers; therefore I've created the following:

SCAN BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THE INTERNET!

elven chainmail in the first game
http://www.filedropper.com/chan12

and in bg2
http://www.filedropper.com/chan12_1
http://www.filedropper.com/chan13
http://www.filedropper.com/chan14
http://www.filedropper.com/chan16
http://www.filedropper.com/chan19

Just stick these files in your override folder, within the game directory. Create an override folder if there's not already one there.

Hope this comes in helpful for some - the files are only hosted at that site for 30 days.

@trinit this might be of interest to you.

Wizards cannot use Elven Chainmail unless they're partly another class that can. And I'm pretty sure Rogues can't anymore either, not without their Use Any Item anyway, but that just lets them cheat on anything.

Lately, Beamdog has been "cracking down" on things like that, where they say "Not Better than Studded Leather" they mean it, including other non-metal armors like Ankheg Plate.

You're right in that it takes a multi/ dual mage to wear it. Thieves can wear it though (unless this has very recently been patched out) with penalties to their ability scores, which should be the same for archers and stalkers imo.

Archers can't wear metal armor, but they can wear things like Ankheg Plate. It's just a different restriction. I do agree that it makes sense to let Stalkers wear Elven Chain.

@JumboWheat01: Thieves can still use Elven Chain Mail without UAI.

I'd always imagined the encumbarance of bulky armor was the issue for archers. Elven chain is supposed to be like wearing clothing, so it would seem ideal for archery.

Ah, I wasn't 100% sure if Thieves lost Elven Chainmail or not. I remember the discussion Beamdog was having with others about things like Ankheg Plate not being able to be worn by certain classes anymore.

Even though it's lightweight, I struggle more with the notion that a sneaky class might wear Ankheg plate, as only chain is going to allow freedom of movement (all be it with a bit more weight to move).

Well they can't sneak in Ankheg Plate, so even if they can wear it, it'll impede their sneaking ability. Which kinda works for non-Stalkers, since they're the only Ranger kit who can stab things in the back.

Yes, it does come with stealth penalties attached. Have you ever heard the noise boiled leather garments make though? Less jingle jingle, more squeak squeak, though no stealth penalties from them strangely.

Supposedly Ninja often wore a vest of fine chain over a layer of felt type fabric, which muffled any sound the armor would make if left loose.

Actually, tailored mail on a gambeson is not really loud. It is however, quite a lot of work (still some 1200 links to rivet for mine).

Sorry to be a johnny-come-lately, but I am interested in an override for the Archer kit. After reading through the Archer characterization and the item descriptions, I do not believe Elven Chain mail should be excluded for this kit. It seems there is some confusion between the needs of druids to use "natural" armors (but not weapons?) and the Archer as a Ranger subclass (kit). I also understand the distinction between light armor and armor that is "lighter" than studded leather. However, particularly for Elven Archers, I do not understand the limitation on the use of Elven chain for Archers in this context. I would also like to point out the penalties associated with the use of Hide Armor that is still allowed for the Archer Kit. Please let me know if there still exists a download of the override or a mod/patch to assist in the override. BTW, I do not believe the AC bonus would be a substantial increase but I like the chain armor appearance, particularly for an elf, than the leather armor appearance currently required.

no mods needed, you just download the files and copy them in the override folder of the game.
but i don't have them and they was only available for 30 days, maybe the OP, that logged in last time in June of the past year, or someone that have those files, read this and make them available to you.

you can also download some modding tool, extract the original files from the game, modify them, and put your own files in the override folder. I am not a modder, but i have done it, is not so difficult and online you find some tutorial that tell you what modding tool to use and what you have to do with it. i have done it only for the original game, not for the EE edition so i can not do it for you right now (i am too lazy to download modding tools upgraded for EE and to study the differences between the procedure to follow in original and EE, sorry...), maybe some modder that read can do it for you, is only a few minutes work for him. or you can ask for help in the modding section of the forums, at least they can give you an hint about the tools to download and some technical assistance.

    hope it helps.
