How to make characters more visible in battle?

The game is intensely visual, and it becomes so you're fighting Dozens at a time with all kinds of explosives and area effect obscuring my view of positions and status effects. It is frustrating by throne of bhaal at saradush, and it never gets clearer

    what about the "sprite highlight" (or at least that is what i think it is called) option in the options menu, in my opinion it kind of looks silly, but it definitely does make your game sprites stick out more
