I have never once used Quayle in my party. I have absolutely no idea just how useless he is or isn't. It doesn't really matter to me. He has a horrible attitude and I just want to kick him in the face all the time. I'm not sure I want some moron walking around condescending on my entire party while I'm trying to get stuff done, is the thing.
I've never used Quayle either. He clutters up the roadway to Baldur's Gate and has the audacity to insult my 7th level PC and her party. I always make it a point to put him out of his misery. In terms of role-playing, if the Flaming Fist ever asked any questions, I'd just tell them he was loitering and breaching the peace. Not that they would shed any tears anyway over the loss of an obnoxious CN gnome.
I always end up killing Minsc as well, since he goes berserk and attacks you if you tell him you won't help him rescue Dynaheir. It spares my entire party his unbearable ramblings about Boo and general do-gooding.
Eldoth and Skie. Both get on my last nerve pretty quickly. Eldoth is such a smug, slimy bastard, all I want to do is kill him, and Skie may be an okay thief, but her sniveling annoys the everloving goodness out of me. Buck up, sweetheart! You're an adventurer now!
And Branwen - "By Valkur's strapping buttocks!" how on earth could anyone not like that? I'm just disappointed she never yodelled.
This always bothered me about Branwen: She isn't Welsh! She's some kind of Scandinavian from 'the north' and yet her name is more Welsh than Owain Glyndwr or... or Dai Jones ap Hywel-Wynne-Davis.
Then how do you explain Neera's (sp?) crazy-American highschool voiceset? Or does the Sword Coast not have a particular regional linguistic accent?
I'm gonna go with Montaron here, i've tried to keep him around for the sake of Xzar who is brilliant but each time I find myself cheering when that group of xvarts, gibberlings or bandits puts the little runt out of his misery. His voice set, actions and general allround attitude really annoy me. In the (possibly bastardized) words of Xzar, "Montaron! You are so aggravating! 'Tis disturbing to my demeanour!"
Montaron might be easier to get along with if you weren't such a taskmaster.

Well Neera's a totally made up name so it holds no cultural significance. As it's a US-made game, one takes an american accent as 'neutral' anyway. Clearly someone made a decision that Branwen was going to have a Swedish (or Danish?) accent. I just think a Welsh accent would have been better. Or otherwise call her Agnetha or something...
I haven't even come close to experiencing every character in my party at least once. But out of the ones I have used, definitely Minsc. I hate him with almost every fiber of my being. I always kill him just for fun.
Where do people get the idea that Skie is a bad thief? She has 13 Str - 18 Dex - 15 Con. How is that bad? She comes far too late in the game, meaning she isn't very viable, I'll agree she isn't viable -- but she isn't BAD or "second rate." Time to learn new words, expand your vocabulary, people.

Whether a character is bad or not depends on what you're judging them on. They can be bad stat-wise, have poor viability, or have an uninteresting personality. When someone talks about Skie not having much use in their game or just being bad, it's assumed they're talking about her viability. Which is bad.
Bleh, splitting hairs over semantics causes me to repeat words for more often than I would like.

It's the fact there are better thiefs in the game, she's not the best at what she does and comes with a 2ed rate bard attached to her.
Well to be fair she is one of the better tanks in the game and arguably the best for an evil party . Also I'm pretty sure her and Viconia have some lesbian thing going on. She also uses quotes from the movie Predator so you have to give her a +1 for that at least.

...Right, I'm with you, but I never see anyone just say "she's a bad character." They always say "she's a bad THIEF." Which heavily implies stats. They already started the semantics battle so I'm going with it.

Yeah what do you know, you compare everyone to Imoen and they suck. Crazy right? That said, yes, Eldoth kinda sucks. Keeping them in a party together is ... difficult for the party formula.

Dude I have not mentioned Imoen once anywhere. Actually I was referring to Safana, Montaron and Coran, but yes Imoen is a better thief as well.

Fair enough. I was half-joking as is, but anyway. I love Safana very much but Skie is statistically better in some important ways. Still, Safana is in a much more convenient location, her personality is a lot better, her Charisma is fantastic. Also if you give her a Tome you can dual-class her to a mage if you want.
Runners up: Safana and Shar-teel. Both have excellent stats and are good representations of their classes, but their voice sets are really, really juvenile.
Safana sounds like a porn star with a head cold, or some neckbeard developer's idea of "sexy". Shar-teel is an ignorant person's idea of feminism gone wrong. Both of them are grating after awhile, and on some level I think they're both condescending and dumb.
I prefer BG2 over BG1 so there are plenty of BG1 NPCs I haven't used much, recently, or at all. I've never actually used Shar-teel. I think I may have tried to once a long time ago, if memory serves, but she didn't survive our duel.
Safana got really annoying after a while because of her lines/voice. I got really sick of hearing how "sensual" the ugly witch felt and eventually booted her out of my party due to her constant irritating banter. I discarded Jan in BG2 for the same reason.

I don't usually play thieves, so I can't comment about how good any of them are or aren't, but I find Skie annoying due to her unpleasant banter. Skie was in my party for one game and hearing her whine about her nails and/or hair during every battle got old real fast.
For a certain time I had Tiax and Eldoth in one of my evil parties. Hmm but I must say that they were really weak. Quayle has an interesting class but not more.
Skie is for me the most useless char because of her whine and Imoen/Safana/Coran are much better.
Eldoth, for being an ass and a bard Garrick, for being a dumbass and a bard
The rest is alright.
Damn bard-asses, i'll say!
I have made the sad conclusion that i dislike each and every character for his individual personality flaws, i think i have issues, give me 5 minutes and i'll find something that gets on my nerves about each one, but i learned to accept their flaws :P
In general i don't pick them based on stats, since the game is soloable as well, you can dominate anything with careful planning and proper actions*. So it's their personalities that i try to choose from.
So if i had to choose those that make me go ape and kill them, i guess one would be Edwin.
The guy is an EPIC level whiner, even when you click on him, he's an awesome mage, the best indeed, and i want him in my group*(ok i lied :P, i do pick based on strength some times), so when he gets on my nerves, i save, kill him repeatedly, and then load and all is well :P
I look at him harshly when i do it too, you should see me giving the "eye" to the PC ~_o :P
In BG2 though, it changes, he becomes much more tolerable and even hilarious several times.
Another is Quayle. Um, dude, you're a lone gnome, in the wilderness, with no witnesses around, and you're giving me the eye with insults?
It actually shocks me that in various places people have said that dislike - I'm sure I've even seen 'hate' in the past - Khalid because of his stammer. That's just really a terrible, terrible attitude. I can't really express how much it stuns me to read that.

Khalid doesn't bother me personally. I'd probably take him along if it wasn't for Jaheira (whom I really dislike). But I could understand how people would think Khalid's stammer is annoying.

Haha really? I dunno, I'm not about to make it a big deal ... but I'll agree it is fairly disgraceful that people cite that as their only reason. It doesn't "stun" me though, I expect such terrible comments on the internet.
Khalid is one of my favourite BGI NPC's...& i do it w/out Jaheira... Jaheira makes an excellent unarmoured/unarmed bumper for the rest of my party...ie. run her in front of the party & let the knobgoblins kill her off... i almost feel guilty because i've never kept Jaheira in my party long enough to experience her romance in BG2...i get rid of her very quickly...
I must say I DO love this discussion. I was fairly amazed that nobody mentioned Imoen though. That is before I realized none of you guys (and gals) have probably played the Polish edition of BG 1. Even though it was quite brilliantly dubbed (srsly, some quotes by one famous Polish actor are still legendary), Imoen's voice made my teeth hurt. I almost NEVER took her (only when I was a mage and needed someone to escort me safely to the Friendly Arm Inn. Not to mention that she's a real bother in BG 2.
I also never liked Khalid and Jaheira. Jaheira had a bitchy voice. Such NPC tend to die a lot during my gameplay.

Shar-Teel and Safana come next, of course.

i like his dialogue, but, the meta-gamer in me hates having one of his quick-slots filled w/ a rodent...
