Items not importing into ToB

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Do items have to be in the inventory? Because I have a bunch of items I want to up grade/use to upgrade others (that are required for said item upgrades) but non of them are porting over such as bards gloves with emarald, rouge stone, star sapphire and diamond
