Cthulhu and the other Lovecraftian deities were all in the original 1st edition of D&D, and the original version of "Deities and Demigods" that has the Lovecraft Gods is pretty much the holy grail of D&D collectors. However, soon after it was published (Lovecraft had been in the public domain for years), Arkham House started expanding their copyright licenses, including their own RPG. Hence we haven't seen them since.
Speaking of the Mythos, I loved Call of Cthulhu. It's still one of my favourite RPG's of all time.
When I was younger, I played in a brutal CoC campaign, which was rather like keeping Turkeys for xmas. It was best not to give them a name or get too attached to them because you knew what was going to happen.
And that was the same with our CoC characters. They were going to die. It was just a question of how long we could survive.
I still remember with a degree of fondness failing a sanity roll in the darkness of a Crypt and being eaten alive by a couple of ghouls, and then rolling up a new character to get straight back into the action - I decided to be a policeman (although this being Britain, I obviously wasn't armed!). The Keeper got me into the action by receiving reports of noises at the cemetery, and suspecting it was kids I jumped into my patrol car and went down to sort them out. It was pitch black, I parked the car by the entrance and had to jump the wall to get into the cemetery. One of the characters ran past me screaming hysterically, but I ventured on bravely. Then I died. I think I lasted about 10 minutes.
I have a 1st edition AD&D Deities and Demigods somewhere in my parents attic, Cthulhu and Elric are in there.
You should definitely rummage though your parent's attic over the holidays. I can't even find an online PDF of that one.....
My copy is on the bookshelf in the basement. Usually, I wait for things like that to go on sale, but for some reason I bought that book just after it came out.
