When to do SoD?

Can someone please explain to me the best way for approaching Siege of Dragonspear?

I initially thought it was blended into the main game but I realize now that it's a stand alone part similar to the Black Pits. Should I finish the entire game first and import my party to SoD? Unsure of what to do. Cheers.

    When you beat the original campaign in BGEE (and you have SoD installed) your party will automatically begin at the start of SoD.

    it's like tob it starts right after you finish bg1.
