Why can't I leave town?

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I have 3 quests that take me out of town, but all of the quest locations are marked as unreachable.

    Go to the City Gates area. Exiting from that area from mark all of the zones outside of Athkatla as reachable.

    This got me the first time I played the game too. ;)
