Does "killing Kivan" still work regarding keeping him?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
I know that used to, if you killed Kivan then resurrected him his quest timer stops and he'll stay with you forever then and you can take your time to do that bandit quest he wants to do.

Does this still work?

    I don't know that method.
    But you can stop the timer just by traveling to the bandit camp area without going anywhere near the actual camp. That's what I do, after Tranzig marks the map, hurry through all the maps at the edge so no fighting if you don't want to, stand on the edge of the bandit camp area, then turn round and carry on what you were doing before.

    hmmm, doesn't that rush open Chapter 4 though?

    I always swore you could either Flesh to Stone and then Stone to Flesh him -OR- kill him and resurrect him and his quest timer stops.

    You have to pick up the letters from Tazok's tent to activate chapter 4.

    Okay, killing him does stop the quest timer.

    Which begs the question. Does this work on every companion? Or just Kivan?
