Best melee weapons in this game?

IMHO, the best weapons are:

Stupefier mace (stun)
Dagger of venom (poison damage)
Twinkle scimitar (defender)
Icingdeath scimitar (fire resistance)
Staff of Striking (there's also a +3 staff available super early to buy)
Spider's Bane (great sword, grants free action)

Any others to be added?

There are two important things when you say best: you probably mean at the end of the game. (the other one is easy access)

Bala's axe or Battle Axe +2
Silver dagger, long tooth or dagger of venom
    Flail +1
    Mace +2
    Morning star +1
    Halbert +2
Staff mace, staff of striking or staff spear
    Bastard sword versus shapeshifters
    Flame tongue or greywolfs sword
    Short sword of backstabbing
    Scimitar defender
Warhammer +2 or warhammer vs giants
    Spear +1
Spiders bane or two handed sword +3

defender is probably the best melee weapon in bg1, it deals as much damage as a two handed sword +1, it gives a +3 to hit bonus, and it gives a whopping +2 AC bonus, AND it's one handed so you can use a shield with it as well

that weapon is pretty much mandatory if you are playing a swashbuckler/blade/monk in bg1

My swashbuckler just stuck with acid arrows and the +2 bow most of the time. I was not prepared to kill Drizzt solo without several cans of spray-cheese.

Paralyzation darts are awesome. A touch on the cheesy side, perhaps, but keep in mind that you get three attacks per round.

But they are no melee weapons

If you only look at damage:
Moonblade gives the same damage and trades one ac bonus for fire resistance.
Staff of striking deals average 5 more damage.
Flametongue deals average one more damage to undead and is as good versus cold using.
Dagger of venom deals average 3 more damage.

D'oh! Okay, well, maybe a mod is in order to allow them to be. Because they rock.

How about Ashideena then? The +2 electric damage is great, it can be used by clerics, and because it causes blunt damage it doesn't take a damage penalty vs certain creatures.

I like a fighter/cleric to dual wield Ashideena and the Capper, the two strongest war hammers in the game. (1d4+4; 1d4+2)

    other options for fighter/cleric are: The Stupefier + mace+2 (1d6+2; 10% stun; 1d6+3)

or flails, because the flail +1 is very easy to obtain up to three and it's good to have this with the flail of ages in mind in the next game.

    clubs give no good options

staffs are also good for priests since there are 3 good ones available: staffmace, staff of striking and staff spear.

As noted above by @Klorox also the +3 Aule's staff is available at Ulgoth's Beard inn early. I reckon staffs are a candidate for MVP for throughout the series if paired with THS, and especially in BG1.

I would probably add in Varscona also because of the cold damage.
