Explain NWN multiplayer

Hello everyone,
I'm 100% new to any NWN game, but am very interested in playing the EE.
I haven't been able to find a clear answer on what multiplayer options are and how they differ; so if someone could answer the following or add input that would be great!
1) I read there's persistent world servers, is that a server without campaign/story? What's the progression like on these?
2) I saw co-op mode on playthroughs, is this limited to 2 players? Also, how hard is the game when a second person is added? I like a challenge.
I'm looking forward to this game, I've loved all of the EE's so far and this one has me hyped. Multiplayer is a big thing for me, so thanks for taking the time to read/answer.

Progression depends on the server. The most important thing IMO is to find a server with a style and player base you like. I've owned NWN since shortly after release, and have reinstalled it on my PCs I don't know how many times... but I never really got into multiplayer until the beginning of this year. Now I log in almost daily.
2) Servers are only limited by the max number of players specified by the host. For the original NWN modules, its slightly easier when there's more people on, but gets harder because XP gets divided further based on party size. Not to mention how you plan to divide gold and loot amongst yourselves.
- You had PvP and Arena type servers where people would make builds and beat each other up
- You had RP/Roleplay servers, which for the most part was separated into several sub-genres. Persistent world was one of them. Most of those are also 'Server Vaults' where you can level up. You also had local vault roleplay where it's a mix of the character builds from the PvP servers, but in a roleplay environment.
- Main campaigners that would play with friends or strangers.
- There's also been a surge of interest in horror survival- whether it be roleplay or just trying to have your character survive depends on the server.
- A whoooooole lot more that I've neglected to mention.
As far as player caps go, it really depends. Most will set it around server stability, though there are other servers out there that have a huge player cap- which is usually through several servers. But I'm fairly certain when NWN:EE is released, there's going to be a lot of servers up, so you'll definitely find something you like!
