Developing A Character

One of the most entertaining and rewarding aspects to any decent Role Play is the creation of a hero. Class, Race, Size, Color, Faith & Gender are used to sculpt a character from the depths of your own imagination. Now the part many people might gloss over is writing a Bio on this new character and making sure the character uses this background to help evolve his actions and decisions.

Selecting the image portrait is also very important! You can't have an image of a Drow while playing a woodland Elf? Or a Dwarf while playing a Human. Selecting a Image that fits your profile is key and have some style when you do this. For those people that really want to delve deeper into the fantasy try adding an entry into the Notes journal within the character profile and using a reference to subject matter from within the game.

Example: Knoland, male Human, Fighter (9), November 30,

Today was horrific I am sore and bloody and the signs of a battle are still covering my armor. My companions are all weary and I am afraid this journey is going very badly. We are to find a Dungeon to the North and must investigate it as it has produced several groups of goblins that are now dead by our hands. We have also lost the young wizard Morlen, and his companion the female Thief looks as if she might abandon this group at any moment and can not seem to find a single positive comment to make...

Eh~ I'm all about Roleplaying if I'm in an actual roleplaying game. *cough* I tend to get really into character.*cough* This is a CRPG though, if you wanna roleplay that hardcore, go for it. Especially if it's a group game and you're more going for roleplaying.

I do add portraits to make sure I have one that fits the character though. The Icewind Dale portraits are good for that, they fit with the Baldur's Gate images rather well and none of them are used in the game so you're not stealing some NPC's face.

However, it's not required. You might have better luck talking about how to do those things (writing a biography, updating pictures, making notes) and then giving an example of how it all ties together instead of just coming out and trying to convince people to roleplay hardcore.

In theory I like the idea of role playing more, but I just don't have the time to do this extensively, and would rather spend what spare time I do have available actually playing the game.
