Tome of Wisdom and Leadership won't increase Charisma

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
Hi,

I have a fighter with Charisma 18. We found the tome of Wisdom and Leadership at the cave below the Gnoll Stronghold. I read the tome but it won't increase my charisma. It just keeps showing '18' but now in red (to reflect that I did not start with this, which I did). I have saved and checked several times to make sure I see what is happening. Any idea of what is going on?

    Nevermind, I will answer my question. One has to remove the pause for the change to take effect beyond removing the book. Not less than half an hour stuck in this.
