Importing from BG:EE to BG2 (vanilla)

Hello guys,
I've just finished a playthrough in BG:EE and wanted to import my characters into my original BG2 installation (2.0.0.12 from GOG.com).
I tried two methods:
1) Copying the Final-Save folder from BG:EE into my BG2 save folder.
2) Exporting my character in BG:EE and copying over the *.chr and *.bio files to my BG2 character folder.
In both cases, my BG2 game crashes when I select the save or character entry during character creation.
Anybody got an idea if the compatibility to the original games is broken now? I remember it working flawlessly ~ 2 years back. I even tried to remove all gear and items from my character and then exporing again - no luck .
Is there a workaround for this?
Thanks!

Then I opened this *.chr file with the legacy ShadowKeeper. It already told me that there were some incompatible items while trying to open the file (in my case it was the Harrower longsword). I created a new save game in BG:EE, only this time I removed the longsword from my inventory beforehand, exported to a new *.chr file in EEKeeper and opened it again with the ShadowKeeper.
Then I only had to replace the portrait (it showed a weird scaling in ShadowKeeper) in the *.chr file and exported a new *.chr file from ShadowKeeper.
That file worked flawlessly while importing into BG2 vanilla.
Thanks for your tips anyway! Hope this helps other players.
