Big metal unit *spoilers*

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I just got the big metal unit armor for the first time and along receiving it, I got scorcher ammunition, frag grenades, pulse ammunition, and a big metal rod. Are these items just for show to try and make the unit seem like an even bigger deal or do they actually have a use?

    The Rod is a ranged wepon that uses the ammo and grenades. Also, I believe the scorcher ammo can be loaded into any ranged weapon.
