What happens when only one party member hit experience cap?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
Let's take as example a party with one character at 161K xp and other 5 party members at 150K xp; what happens when party gains 6K xp?

Does each party member gain 1K xp? (the 1K to the already capped party member is simply wasted)
Or does the 5 less experienced characters gain 1200xp ?

    Every party member gains 1K XP.

    The game secretly keeps track of additional XP. even though it shows "161000" it's still counting.

    if you import your character directly to bg2 then you will likely start with additional levels
