Killing Wanev the wizard

So I stumbled upon the residence of Wanev the Wizard. Seeing as it was a cancer on the countryside I slayed his minions and him along with them.

As it turns out, you are supposed to get a sub-quest from Wanev in order to get the objective (a gem) for another quest. Seeing as the gem is not on his corpse, have I screwed up and locked myself out of yet another quest?

Nevermind! I mustve absent-mindedly slipped it into my pocket as I was scouring the place, because I just found it in my inventory.
