do animal companions drain experience?

Howdy. Having a blast replaying the OC as an arcane archer. Planning on taking a druid or ranger through the expansions... I seem to recall in the old days that summoning an animal companion eats into experience. That it is like having another henchman, and your experience gets split. Is that true with the EE? if so, a major bummer... It never made sense to me -- using a key class tool that makes you weaker by reducing how fast you level up. Grrrr... Any thoughts? Is this problem still a part of the EE? If so, it makes me rethink how I want to ranger or druid...
