Another "Will it work on my pc?" Thread..

I recently bought an hp g7-2215dx Notebook, and was curious if this game will run smoothly on this system... Everything is factory basic. I wonder because I downloaded BG2 off of gog on it, and it runs pretty choppy... IDK if it's because this has windows 8 and it's running a ten year old game or what, but that kind of scared me when I started it up... Here's a link to the specifications, I'm rather computer illiterate, I can get the basics, but that's about it.. So some experienced input would be appreciated. Thank you!

The only reason I see for the old BG not running smoothly on this notebook would be the graphics card. Intel graphics cards weren't available at the time of BG/DX7/8 and Intel probably doesn't optimize that much for games, especially not for older ones. So that might be an issue.

I can't imagine that this will be a problem with the updated BGEE, or even if there is a problem in the beginning, it very likely get's solved thanks to the game engine being in development again.

You might wanna check if there's any intel driver updates on your new computer

    Intel® Driver Update Utility

    It helps.

The game works on older chipsets than Intel HD3000, albeit with some performance issues http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/7134/known-hardwaredriver-issues . I don't know what the performance will be on HD3000, we should know pretty soon as people report their experience here. Overhaul is looking into adding a DirectX render path to bring good performance to these old chipsets, no ETA on that though.

Well hopefully like someone mentioned my bg2 problems were because intel graphics cards weren't around and bg2 wasn't made to run on them.. I mean, I bought this computer last Friday, and it was a new item.. My chipset can't be that old lol.

Intels "HD" graphics series is their first attempt at a decent integrated GPU.

That said, HD3000 supports up to OpenGL 3.1, which means it will work with BG:EE. I absolutely suggest getting the latest GPU drivers. Visit this page and choose either Windows 8 32 bit or 64 bit, then download the latest version.

I do think part of the reason you had problems with BG2 was because of it's age. I have a higher end computer and have to mess with a lot of stuff to get it to run right.

I did try the option where it scans my laptop and it said all my drivers were the latest.

Just finished downloading. Started my human PC Monk... Runs like a dream, glad I was worried about nothing! Now I don't have to take back this great deal of a laptop! :)

There are known issues with the Intel Integrated chipsets because they have a lack of proper OpenGL support, which is what BG:EE is based off of. Luckily the devs are aware of this and are looking into implementing DirectX instead, which Intel works well with.
