Cult of the Unseeing Eye: Can't get the password

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I've spoken to Sassar in the Cult of the Unseeing Eye quest, and he never tells you about Tad or the password. I tried speaking with Tad anyway, but the prompt to provide the password doesn't appear. Is there a way to fix this, or another way to access the lower levels?

    Did you speak to Sassar twice? He only gives you the password after you have come back up with the rift device - I think it's the conversation in which he warns you against taking the device 'outside'.

    It's been a while since I played, but don't I need the password to get the rift device?

    You have to go down past the crypt area (where Sassar is) to the temple to get the first half of the rift device. Then you come back up, speak to Sassar again and he gives you the password to access the beholder area where the second half of the device is.
