Dead party members and XP?

in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
I always thought that dead party members do not get xp, but that they do count towards the xp per character per encounter calculations.

But I've heard different stories, can anyone confirm?

    That's exactly right. XP is always divided by the number of party members, dead ones get nothing. So if there are 6 characters and one is dead, their share of XP is wasted.
