Vaarglan fight doesn't start correctly

in Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
Got a save where I'm in the Whistling Gallows. When I exit, Vaarglan comes up and asks if I've seen Alacander. When I say no, his associate teleports in, and they discuss killing me. If I answer 1 or 2, they say let's kill me party, then it gets stuck before anyone else teleports in - and hangs. Any ideas?
