Help with a Cleric/Ranger

in New Players (NO SPOILERS!)
Right, so I'll be getting myself the cheesy cleric. I will most likely not play it through to BG2, but instead wait till BG2:EE (which is why the druid spells are still useful in the long run) so dual-classing him at 7 or later is out of the question, because it will be the only healer in my team.
I just want to know which is superior, dual or multi. I want it to be a decent fighter, so the HP and proficiencies from the ranger lvls would surely help, but still be a top-notch divine spell-caster.
And if dual, which is what I am leaning towards at the moment; at what lvl should I switch? 2 or 3 for the extra proficiency?

    Multiclassing it simplifies things a lot. But really, one diving caster might not be enough, especially a multi or dual class. You might want to grab a cleric to double down on the support goodness.
