Is there any point to the dire rat?

Nearly all the animal companions seem to have their dominant niches (tripping wolf, tanking bear, etc.) but when I search online for animal companion or ranger/druid guides for dire rat advice I see that very little is written, or what is written is dismissive.

Is the dire rat actually good for anything or is it just a lousy choice?

    Other than roleplay reasons, it's got a powerful Diseased bite and Sneak Attacks. The bite DC increases as you level up, so it's a good PvP companion, if nothing else.

    I was looking for something PvP oriented for a ranger. Nice.
