Cannot import BG character

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
BG2:EE cannot import BG characters: it doesn't show BG save games at all, and BG characters lock up the character creation interface.

It is unclear why an "Enhanced Edition" has deliberate changes to make it incompatible with the original Bioware product. That stinks of vendor lock-in even.

Can it be fixed somehow?

    I would probably just recreate the character if importing took too much time.
