Cant get IWD ee Multiplayer working

Im running GoG's latest version of IWD:EE on windows 10 and everything seems to work fine for me but some questions for my friend who is having issues:

-He is on mac, is that an issue? ( has the same version and also used GoG to install the game )
-He seems to be able to make local games only but when he hits multiplayer off the main menu and waits for the network connection it eventually times out ( where you can wait, or chose cancel/local connection )

    are you both using the same frame rate? maybe make sure your frame rates settings for both of you are the same
