How do you avoid/handle NPCs causing aggro against one another from AoE spells?

I'd prefer that players can still hit each other with their spells and AoE, but it isn't working well with my NPCs. They occasionally all end up attacking their casters (or the casters end up killing half of them). How have you dealt with this?
